Pro Beauty Tips From Steve Vayne Make-up Artist And Hairstylist
Enjoy this entertaining, informative and personal interview with make-up artist and hairstylist Steve Vayne, a great read for everyday women, pro or aspiring makeup artists.
Steve is not only a starship captain at heart but also provides great skin care and make-up tips throughout the interview like: “Close your eyes when airbrushing yourself”.
Q: Tell a little about yourself personally and if you attended school or you are a self taught makeup artist?
A: I love Make up since I am a little boy, I always messed up my mothers cosmetic bag to make up my sister and no matter where our mom tried to hide her cosmetic bag, I FOUND IT ;))
I´m freelance Make up Artist & Hairstylist since I´m 19 y.o. Self taught first but then I decided to take some courses and I did a lot of assisting works to get into the industry.

Q: Do you think going to school for make-up artistry is important to excel in the business later on?
A: To learn about hygienic working and the basics, yes. But in order to be an ARTIST I think you must be born as an artist. It´s all about the talent and nobody can teach you this :)
Q: Did you always wanted to be an artist, or did you stumble upon your talent by chance? Who or what inspired you to become a makeup artist?
A: Uhm, as a child I wanted to be a starship captain but when I recognized that I might be born 500 years too early for this I came up with that “make up thing”.
Q: What is your favorite or most exciting aspect about your job?
A: Oh there is sooooo much, but above all I love to work with new people almost every day.
Q: What surprises you most about working as a makeup artist?
A: Before and After Pictures… every time I think: “Wow, it is magic!”
Q: Describe your “Classic Approach to Beauty.” how do you define beauty?
A: Beauty is clean to me. No visible Make up products on the face. A flawless, well moisturized skin, full lips and clear, bright eyes.
Q: What individual products and brands you’re “addicted” to at the moment and you use on a daily basis?
A: Uslu Airlines´s airbrush colors, I use these water based products every day since I have them. Even on myself.
Q: What are some of the most basic but effective skin care tips in general that you have, that are really important?
A: Do not put Silicone on your skin. You´re skin is almost entirely made of water, so use waterbased moisturizers that do store moisture in the skin instead of just laying on the surface. I use Nuskin Skincare, it´s best I think.
Q: Have you had an extreme, crazy or bad experience with a skin care product or during a makeup session? If so, what happened?
A: Haha, the first time I was airbrushing myself I wanted to SEE what I was doing… it ended up in the eye, that was not very comfortable ;)
Tip: Close your eyes when airbrushing yourself, with a little practice you will FEEL where the color goes due to the intensity of the air stream.
Q: What do you find to be the most common mistakes women make with makeup? What’s the worst thing a woman can do to her skin?
A: Many women use Oil based foundations, this is not good for your skin, girls. The companies (Chanél, Dior, you name it) use mineral oils to make the product go on smoothly on the skin but that cannot work at all since, like I said before, your skin is made of water almost entirely. And the companies use chemical ingredients in order to make oil and water mix. And now who wants chemicals on the skin ? Best way to test a foundation is to put it in a glass of water, if it disperses in the water it´s perfect. If it just lays like dirt on the bottom of the glass without moving it does not last on your skin either.
Q: What do you think are best/worst trends in the makeup / skin care industry right now?
A: I believe that trends are only set up to sell products, I believe in classics !
Q: Do teenage girls needs to splurge on high-priced makeup products, or are drugstore items are just as satisfactory?
A: That depends on what a girl needs to feel good. Some people NEED a brand name on the Powder ;) But there are not too many good products on the market whether cheap or expensive… test it with the glass of water ;)

Q: What feature(s) do you love to accentuate and why?
A: The complexion, there is nothing in the world that makes a human look as good as perfect skin.
Q: What are your steps for the perfect, flawless, natural look?
A: Cleaning off the skin, exfoliate if necessary, apply toner, then I´m doing a little face massage with a good moisturizer in order to make my model feel relaxed and look better because of this ;)
Then spot concealing and a little red lipstick on the cheeks instead of powder blush.
Reminder: a powder on the face always looks like a powder on the face and we want people to think “wow, she´s beautiful” and not ” oh, nice make up”.
Finishing off with airbrush make up. ALWAYS. No matter if for HD filming, photography or just for every day.
Q: What is a really quick way to change a day look to a special occasion or nighttime face?
A: An additional layer of Mascara (maybe even eyeliner) and a little more blush. I don’t like heavy lipsticks these days and stay away from glosses, they look messy too quickly !
Q: What are the differences between applying makeup on models and on real women?
A: There is no difference. A face is a face and every face has those areas you wanna bring forward or you wanna hide.
Q: In terms of eyeliner, if you had to choose between a pencil, liquid, or creme/gel based, which one would you choose? Why?
A: I use a wet eyeliner brush and an eyeshadow ;) I always use eyeshadows with damped brushes, it looks better !
Q: Lip gloss or Lipstick. Which product is best? Why?
A: Lipstick, slightly dabbed into the lip, no gloss… perfect. Glosses are so 1990´s
Q: What should a client consider before deciding to try permanent makeup? What is the difference between permanent and semi-permanent makeup?
A: I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS AT ALL. Just imagine something goes wrong … You´ll look like an idiot for a very long while !
Q: What brand/type of concealer is your favorite for covering up the after effects of a late night out i.e. under-eye circles, blemishes?
A: Uslu Airlines Concealer ;) Warm it up with our finger and dab it on. It lasts like forever.
Q: How about airbrush spray makeup trend? Are these products better or easier to use than standard sponge or finger application? If yes when would you recommend using them?
A: Like I said: I ONLY do airbrush make up since there is no better way to apply make up plus you can use stencils to create cool effects. But PLEASE do stay away from silicone based formulas. No one needs this.
Q: What do your clients think of you? What are some individual testimonials?
A: Oh that is hard to say but I will give you this: 99% calls again ;)
Q: Would you share some of your future goals, your life motto, any words of wisdom that get you by in life and professional career?
A: My motto is: I am exactly what I want to be, in every second of my life. And really, I am. I like myself and I think every human should do because this is the only way to be LUCKY with your life. And since I´m having a lot of fun doing what I do I will continue getting cooler and cooooooooooooler jobs.
Q: What tips and advice do you have for aspiring makeup artists just starting out?
A: ASSIST, ASSIST, ASSIST. Only a REAL pro can show you how to deal with the industry and how to handle a celebrity for example. It will give you certainty in what you do. And ASK if you do not understand, only speaking people can be helped. This is what the Make up Artist I assisted for told me and it is true. Thank you to Alexander Becker by the way !
And another very important thing is to always know what you can or cannot do. If you just finished your first beauty class make sure not to accept the call from Hollywood, this can ruin everything you worked so hard for. Regards, Steve
