Urban Halo was created in 2002, as the brainchild of alternative hairdressing entrepreneuse Anna Holt.

During her own search for a new dreadlocked or textured style, it became apparent that there was a distinct lack of reputable, affordable but professional alternative hairstyling on offer in the North East. Choosing a stylist hung midway between two extremes: There were ‘friends of friends’, who would offer to ‘have a go’ at knotting your hair for £10 on the sofa one drunken night, or there were the mainstream salons who appeared to have added dreadlocks to their list of services almost as an afterthought or as a way to boost profits, rather than holding any particular enthusiasm or creative flair for the style.

“Neither end of the scale seemed to reassure me of the quality of styling I was after, for the right price, and with reliable and appropriate aftercare on offer too. I believe that hair is a key medium for personal creative expression, so I decided to set up Urban Halo as an alternative hairdressing service with this in mind...run both by and for alternative people.”

Added to her training and experience, Anna’s motivation, patience and creative edge have earned her an impressive reputation across the UK, especially with regard to her work on Caucasian dreadlocks, and clients regularly travel to Newcastle from up and down the country to have their hair styled. Meanwhile, order requests for synthetics come in from as far afield as the USA and Canada. Previous clients include Ginger (The Wildhearts), Luis (Ginger & the Sonic Circus) and Gav & Mark (Because We Can).

The business is constantly evolving through the desire to explore new techniques, materials and styles, and Summer 2008 saw the launch Urban Halo Merchandise, a sister business dealing in the creation and sale of hairpieces, falls and pre-made synthetic dreadlocks, along with texture inspired artwork, alternative hair products, unusual and organic piercing jewellery and other accessories.

The Urban Halo angel brand is taking off too, with two new characters joining the crew for the merchandise business launch at Skin Deep’s International Tattoojam festival in Wales.
