Interview With Photographer Stephanie Malloy

Enjoy the following candid interview with 21 year old New Jersey based photographer Stephanie Malloy.

Q: Do you like to talk about yourself or your pictures? If yes, about what aspects of photography? If no, why?
A: Sometimes, About how I try to make an image look different from the angled views. Also how other people like my work !

Q: How would you describe your attention span?
A: Depends. I Do have ADHD But with working with people I can sometimes control it. I think it helps me sometimes in my photography! I do go off to other things sometimes!

Q: When did you decide to become a photographer?
A: When I was a senior in High school. I took pictures for them there!

Q: What does photography mean to you?
A: It is a captured image that tells a story whether it’s Weddings or just people it could tell a lot in just one pose!

Q: Can you recall the first photo you took that made you go WOW!?
A: Hm. I took it of one of my dogs! I was like that’s a awesome picture! as well as my parents thought.

Q: Do you have any formal training regarding photography?
A: Not really, I took 2 photography classes but my college does not offer the degree for it. Eventually I’ll go to a school for it.

Q: How technical is your photography?
A: Depends, I know basics but if I try to get into a convo with an person with no knowledge of it I guess I can be technical. I love to learn!

Q: How do you feel about cropping?
A: Its ok. I think it changes the picture if you crop to an extent. Ill do it if it looks good.

Q: Where is your favorite place to live and work as a photographer in the World and why?
A: I haven’t traveled but I can say I like the landscape in NJ. But the cityscape is very interesting! It really depends!

Q: Define the word “beauty”!
A: Beauty is in everyone! Not just outside that says beauty but the inside is the most important beauty of all!

Q: What is your most favorite and least favorite word in photography or life? How do they make you feel?
A: Poser. I hate when people call people that! It is someone trying to be someone/thing they are not. I believe we all are doing that because we are trying to be something to ourselves but have to achieve it first. So we ALL are posers aren’t we!?

Q: How does your personality change when you look through the camera?
A: I get a little more serious! I guide the person I tell them what is wrong or right! I sometimes am shy though!

Q: How do you feel about missed shots which cannot be recreated?
A: I get verrry angry at myself. But that’s why I take a lot of pix!

Q: Ever concerned about failure?
A: No one fails unless you let it! Its failed when you led fail defeat you!

Q: Who are your influences?
A: All photographers! I look at their work and wow them! I do not discriminate!

Q: What is your favorite image, either your own or someone else’s or both? Describe its creation or meaning to you?
A:

That’s one of my favorite! but I cant say what my fave is! I love my work as well as others! This is relaxing to me. The sun on the water and the branch interruption. But it makes the picture!

Q: Describe a day in your personal or professional life.
A: Well, The Gym, Then out. Either work or pictures with friends! I do not take pictures all the time. but I usually am on the computer looking for inspirations!

Q: What are the biggest personal or professional challenges you face on a daily basis?
A: Dedication. Procrastination. and lack of confidence. (Sometimes)

Q: What has been the single biggest obstacle against growing as a photographer in whole?
A: Not having the money for studio space or to afford lights and a extra camera.

Q: What are your favorite subjects to photograph?
A: People and landscapes.

Q: Tell your funniest, scariest, most bizarre, most touching story from a photo shoot!
A: That have to be the shoot in blacklight. I had a model in line for NUDE blacklight pictures but she completely ignored me that day so I needed another model so a friend helped out but we couldn’t do NUDE because she does not do that. Although they cam out good! I was soo angry. NOW I make them pay me money to uphold the contract and it is non-refundable. (only on serious shoots)

Q: Have you ever thought about or actually stopped doing photography? What were the circumstances?
A: YES, my camera broke! and I was mad because I really had no money to fix it. But this is something I love to do so I didn’t want to let that defeat me! AND its really hard to find good photography jobs.

Q: Do you ever have photographer’s block and if yes how do you deal with it?
A: Yes I do. I go on the internet to get inspiration, or go for a walk!

Q: What types of assignments are you attracted most?
A: Horror/gore/Zombies. And I need more sexy and fashion pix!

Q: Describe what black and white photography means to you?
A: All pictures laid out in black and white giving it a somber look.

Q: Do you think of yourself as an artist and what do you think of the word artist?
A: Yes. I create images. I create a story. I do Create! Artist is someone who creates something either in the norm or out. Someone who can take a average lets say Lollipop and make it art!

Q: How do you describe your photographic style?
A: Its different, Angles are what I like. I don’t like HEAD ON shots. But I like to try different!

Q: What has been the most surprising or most predictable reaction to your photographs?
A: How much I take! I just let it go and the trigger is always going. A recent shoot I only took just 7o pictures and that was shocking! I liked it though… because i didn’t have to go through 300 of one person!

Q: Tell a little secret about yourself that no-one knows …
A: I’m a person who hides not much. I do not lie. But I do like to have fun. I lack friendships because of Trust!

Q: Who or what would you love to shoot that you haven’t already?
A: A sexual love between man and woman. Not sex just the intense LOVE before it.

Q: What would you have done differently during your photography career so far and could this be an advice to others?
A: I would have spent money more wisely and got myself a great setup!

Q: What are your thoughts on the paparazzi and their effects on photographers and photography?
A: Well I think paparazzi is not art. You follow people around and evade their space and just shooting on what you get. It’s ok but not for me.

Q: How do you feel about digital manipulation and to what extent do you utilize it?
A: It could be fraud! I don’t mind the messing of saturation and colors but when you take a picture and doctor it and make it look like something its not that’s not right!

Q: What other thoughts would you like to share?
A: That anyone can be something. Nobody is NOTHING!
