For a photographer living in Hawaii the beach and kids boogie boarding are obvious subject matters. Cropping the photos in a rectangular panoramic shape has been the obvious choice for me esthetically.
As a experiment I went to my favorite beach called Sandy’s on the East side of Oahu and decided to crop my pictures in a classic 6×6 medium format style.
As anything new it was challenging a complete departure from the familiar panoramic style which I believe really compliments this subject.
At first look some of the drama of the dynamic nature of waves was lost and I had to compensate for that somehow.
In certain photos I decided to get close to the subjects especially in the water to get a more intimate feel. In other photos where scale was important I included more background to put the subject in context with the location.
Te speed of action made the usual careful planning and setups impossible.
I am not 100% satisfied with the results but it was an educational experience. I think I am still cropping too close in many instances and still trying to control the out of control elements of the scenery.
This experiment was a necessary step towards breaking free from the boundaries of model photography where the photographer has a lot more control and time to take the pictures.
