August 14, 2009

Enjoy the following interview with London based fashion, bridal and bodypainting make-up artist Jessica Nurse.

Q: Tell a little about yourself personally and if you attended school or you are a self taught makeup artist?

A: I am a full time freelance make-up artist based in the midlands. I studied at Leicester college a two year course in artistic make-up and special effects and then went on to graduate from the London college of Fashion and FdA in specialist make-up design, fashion and editorial make-up.

Q: Do you think going to school for make-up artistry is important to excel in the business later on?
A: I think it gave me more confidence and taught me lots of little tips about the make-up world to help me along.

Q: Did you always wanted to be an artist, or did you stumble upon your talent by chance? Who or what inspired you to become a makeup artist?
A: Initially I wanted to do anything creative as soon as I left school. I was looking for an arty course. As soon as I looked into the artistic make-up course I couldn’t believe I could be learning something day in day out that was so creative and fun.

Q: What is your favorite or most exciting aspect about your job?
A: Meeting different people all the time and never knowing what you have got yourself in to when you turn up to a photo shoot.

Q: What surprises you most about working as a makeup artist?
A: The models and how they are all so different! Some are so cheeky!

Q: What individual products and brands you’re “addicted” to at the moment and you use on a daily basis?
A: I Love MAC products! I also think Paradise products are amazing to bodypaint with.

Q: What do you think are best/worst trends in the makeup / skin care industry right now?
A: I think matte lips and neons on the lips are massive this season!

Q: What feature(s) do you love to accentuate?
A: I think people tend to forget the lips a little by just adding gloss.. Sometimes a little liner makes all the difference. I also think accentuating the cheek bones look amazing!

Q: What are the differences between applying makeup on models and on real women?
A: Models seem to have younger skin. Sometimes none, it tends to be their bone structure that makes them stand out!

Q: In terms of eyeliner, if you had to choose between a pencil, liquid, or creme/gel based, which one would you choose? Why?
A: I love technakohl from MAC it is water proof and really makes the eye look smoky in the water line.

Q: Lip gloss or Lipstick. Which product is best? Why?
A: Love them both! Think matte is more in this season though! So lipstick!

Q: What tips and advice do you have for aspiring makeup artists just starting out?
A: Test shoot lots! Don’t be shy and contact everybody!
