Creative Photography Concepts With Androgynous Asian Fashion Model
February 8, 2005
I like to have fun, experiment and improvise with photography concepts. I had a chance to do so while I lived on Waikiki Beach, Hawaii during an action packed 2-day marathon photoshoot.
This is a cross section of the approximately thousand photos taken. The locations of the following photos are a hotel room with various props, the office of my dentist and the streets of Waikiki at night.
Smokey eyes and slick hairstyle give a retro look to this photo courtesy of New York based make-up artist Roshar.
The androgynous features of the beautiful Asian model are further accentuated by the makeup.
I really like this photo, the lines of the oriental fan really draw in the viewer’s attention by pointing at the main element: the model’s face.

Asian Model Wearing Creative Professional Make-up
Glued lace and body make-up was used to achieve this editorial alien organic visual effect.
The underlying theme of this photoshoot as many before was to make the best of the given circumstances (location, models, props, light).
I truly consider these lacy photos another one of my ghetto fabulous series. Roshar representing the fabulous part of course and me shooting ghetto style (without assistants, professional lights or studio; in a small hotel room). The background, yes you guessed right is made of the leftover lace.
I shot dozens of different compositions with the lacy background; after all how often do I get to photography a lace covered androgynous Asian model?
I like the simplicity of this picture and the intense eye contact.

The soft focus delivers more fantasy and less realism. I find the elements of this photo balanced and pleasing to the eye. When applicable I like to utilize the Golden Ratio / The Rule Of Thirds / Fibonacci Spiral as compositional guidelines.

This close-up delivers detail, drama and intensity. There are no horizontal or vertical lines on this photo, all lines created by the nose, jaw, eyes and lips are diagonal elements of a dynamic composition.

The coldness of the blue color and another model adds a bit more depth and story to this photo.
One might expect these alien sci-fi females to be a lot more animated or violent (perhaps ready to do some invasive probing tests) but I enjoy their quiet mood better.

Asian fashion Model At Dentist Office
Because I find the cookie cutter approach to photography quite boring and uninspiring the next location was the office of my dentist.
Making the interior visually appealing was a lot more challenging than I though. As time progressed cropping out as much of the background as possible (but keeping enough in to be able to tell a story ) and filing the frame with the model proved to be the best formula.
The black mini dress and the silver choker nicely contrast with what women usually wear to the dentist.

The background is quite busy but it was a fun concept; had to be careful though so the G-rated theme would not slip into a more risqué category.

The dental x-ray provided a cold blue element in the background and the bright red lips illuminated by the dental lamp look a bit vampire like to me so the photo has that nice color contrast and an interesting look and feel.

The original idea was for the model to appear to be kissing the dental x-ray on the mouth. It was late afternoon after the office closed so time was a factor; perhaps with more experimentation this concept could have been developed further.

My absolute favorite photo from this series if not from the whole two day session. The circular frame is courtesy of a large dental magnifying glass that has an arm and can be pulled over the face of the patient / model.
In my mind I have given a title to this photo: model inside a space station, others could have a completely different interpretation but the way she is looking out all I can think of is that she is in a space capsule.
The lips and teeth are perfect, the left eye looks a bit hopeless and lost (in space) and the right eye is invisible with light beams shooting out courtesy of the fluorescent lights on the ceiling.

Colorful Asian Fashion Model Photos At Night
A lucky find on the dark streets of Waikiki was this brightly lit green stairway. The cold green nicely contrasted against the warm red color of the model’s dress and shoes and tanned skin color.
Once again there are many great lines in this photo (created not only by the bricks, the railing and the stairs but the model’s limbs too). Geometry is something I am quite conscious of when composing my photos.

Besides the vibrant colors several diagonal lines add excitement to this composition as well.
