Yes, it is time again for another installment of modeling advice.
How to become a model? Who should be a model and who should not quit their day job at Dairy Queen?

Asian Models Are The Best Models

BE ASAIN! This is the No 1 item on my list! Asian women have naturally beautiful skin, hair and stunning symmetric facial features.
Attention photographers: want dramatic results? Cast an Asian girl for your next high fashion, swim wear, lingerie or nude photo shoot!

The resulting photos will be the envy of other photographers and models. Producing black and white photos is key. Much beauty, sensitivity and story can be expressed through color photographs but do not give into the Technicolor temptation. Those B&W’s will rock the socks off the viewer! Guaranteed!!!

Are You Phat Or Fat?

Unless the model’s goal is the be Samoa’s Next Top Model size DOES matter! No self respecting photographer wants to hide undesirable flabs of fat, cellulite and stretch marks by using:

  • creative lighting (low light?)
  • poses that compliment her figure (fetal position?)
  • extensive airbrushing (all night long?)

The above fixes are not fun and can completely impede any creative process.
When pursuing a modeling career one must be realistic regarding which category and size of clothes she will fit in (literally).

Beauty Is Optional Brain Is NOT

Barbi is out brain is in. This is a no brainer therefore no need to be a brain surgeon to pick out the high maintenance spoiled princess from a bikini lineup. She most likely cannot stand still, the worst poser and the most demanding.
If you are a princess look for a prince not a modeling career!

Desperate Photographers DO NOT Create Models

ANYONE CAN BE A MODEL! At least a self proclaimed model. Desperate or simply bad photographers will take pictures of just about anyone for apparently any reason, anywhere wearing anything.

A great place to browse hundreds of “so called models” is the German modeling portal: Model-Kartei.
There anyone can find the finest housewives Germany has to offer, sortable by their cup sizes. Not as pleasant as it might sound.
Fact: the ability to find a willing photographer to shoot with you does not automatically make you a model!

Nobody Ever Got Fat On Humble Pie

If the honest and realistic language of this post is hurtful to any wannabe model they will never make it! The tone of this post is nothing compared to real life rejections!

Rejection is often viewed as negative but I always thought it is very positive. Rejection is a great compass which can help avoid paths that lead to a dead end.
Rejection can inspire the strong mind and destroy the weak one. Both reactions are appropriate and while one can be rather painful they will further guide the person towards a better future.

Rejection is like diarrhea or projectile vomiting, it expels the harmful, unnatural and unnecessary. It is an unpleasant means which justifies a brighter end. Rejection does its job very well therefore it deserves respect and our attention.
Expect rejection, embrace rejection, rejection is your best friend!

No Pay No Gain - Paying For Photo Shoots - Paying Photographers

Paying for the services of a photographer is way more controversial then it should be.
In a perfect world the solution should be obvious: the customer pays to the professional according to the value of the product or service.

The reason why this became a gray area and an often contested issue is because there is no clear line which separates professional photographers from the amateur shutterbugs.
The two ends of the spectrum are clearly distinguishable. It is easy to determine who is a top of the line professional (the photos rock) and the know-nothing-wannabe (the photos suck).

I have always had the following advice for models: it is OK to pay to photographers if the resulting photos could not have been obtained from free photo shoots or the pictures will clearly improve the models portfolio. Valuable experience can also be gained by working with a professional photographer.

Often a bizarre reversal of customer and service professional can occur. Models without much experience, talent or looks will charge desperate photographers. This is unfortunate but because of supply and desperate demand it will go on.

What Models Should Never Pay For

First: E-books which hold all the secrets to “How To Become A Model”.

Excerpt from E-book website:

“This guide has been selling for up to $29.95 U.S. SPECIAL OFFER: If you buy the guide today, Friday, August 17, 2007 you can have this valuable insider information for the incredible price of only $14.97.” - Right!

Second: never pay upfront fees to agencies, ever.

It is sometimes recommended that you bring an escort to the shoot who will not obstruct the creative process (one that shuts up, stays out of the way and does not complain how long the photoshoot is taking).
