Clues Of A Dramatic Photographer

As a model researches her photographer a few basic steps are necessary to ensure a successful photo shoot.
By visiting several photographers website this initial research is an excellent chance to measure up different photographic styles, tastes in models, selections of locations, uses of light, life philosophies, etc.

If a photographer has dramatic style and dramatic images in his or her portfolio it is obvious that the dramatic genre might come up as the main or one of the themes during the photo shoot or photo shoot preparation.
Also it is common sense that a good modeling portfolio needs to be as versatile as possible containing images of different styles, looks, with different emotions, make up, hair, clothes, locations, etc.

Yes, But I Am A Nice Girl!

Several times I have heard the following line: I cannot be mean and dramatic, that is just not me, I am a nice girl!
If this little confession is made public during photoshoot preparation it is useful information even though it means the model is limiting herself by sticking to one look - surely a fatal mistake.

If this is discovered while the photo shoot is already in progress, the options are either to abandon the idea or try to explain and convince the model about the value of a versatile portfolio.

Many times she will not be able to act dramatic and will keep repeating the “I am a nice girl” line. The concept then must be abandoned!

Bombshell News: Modeling Is Also Acting!

I would never suggest a dramatic style unless I was 100% positive it was the right idea for the model.
Many models who have a “nice girl” portfolio are capable to find a dramatic side and often thankful that our photo shoot resulted “finally” in different images.
They understand that modeling is acting and sticking with one, the model’s own personality is not modeling or at least it is not going to be successful modeling.

My Boyfriend Is Not Happy About My Modeling!

Domestic and relationship issues and situations must be handled before the photoshoot preferably before a model begins to model.
The photographer has many details to oversee and having another monkey (jealous boyfriend, fiance or husband) on the back can be … well, a royal pain.

Some photographers do not even shoot with a significant other present no matter how “uninvolved” they promise to be during the shoot.
A friend or a girlfriend is always OK but the possible added relationship drama and distraction is unnecessary during the shoot.

Your Way Is Not My Way!

Unless it is an uncomfortable, inappropriate situation the directions from the photographer (the boss of the photoshoot) should be followed as much as possible.
Of course creative input from the model is permitted, often encouraged and welcomed.

When the creative ideas and directions of the photographer are defied and refused, the shoot seldom result in useful, quality images.
Once the model-photographer trust is broken it is rarely restored.
When mistrust occurs it is clearly visible in the eyes of the model and on the photos.

There can be many reasons for this type of mistrust: inappropriate language, posing or clothing suggestions or any kind of inappropriate behavior on the photographer’s part.

Other reasons could be lack of self confidence, lack of adventurous spirit, lack of open mind, or lack of creativity on the model’s part.
Also lack of thorough research of the photographer by the model can result in unexpected situations.

These “princesses” are often not able to trust anyone in general and the photographer just happens to be “today’s target”.
Possible ways to discover and avoid a head strong model situation is to communicate as clearly and as detailed as possible before the photo shoot regarding what is expected from the model.
