Carlyn Phillips of Tampa, FL – Make-up Hair Artist Interview

Q: What is your favorite or most exciting aspect about your job?
A: Working but enjoying the work that I do. How many people can actually say that?

Q: What tips and advice do you have for aspiring makeup artists just starting out?
A: Check your ego at the door! In this business it’s all about your personality and how well you work with others. Makeup artists come a dime a dozen. Making clients happy and comfortable with who you are and your abilities will keep them calling back.

Q: Tell a little about yourself personally and if you attended school or you are a self taught makeup artist?
A: I’ve been applying makeup and styling hair every since I was a teenager. I loved experimenting and trying new looks. A cosmetology instructor noticed my talent and encouraged me to attend her classes, but I decided to go another career direction instead.
Ten years later the beauty bug bit me again and I have been following my heart every since! Art is my background and only formal training. Everything else is self-taught or knowledge I’ve picked up from working as a Model and attending industry seminars.

Q: What surprises you most about working as a makeup artist?
A: The ability to be creative on the fly. To look back at my work and say, “How did I come up with that?”

Q: What are some of the most basic but effective skin care tips in general that you have, that are really important?
A: Drink plenty of H2O and keep skin free of sun damage.

Q: What are the differences between applying makeup on models and on real women?
A: All the tricks come out to create the illusion on an model. Real women like to keep a natural, barely-there look.
