Lonicera – Honeysuckle flower trivia: Lonicera was named after Adam Lonicer, a Renaissance botanist. Honeysuckle Weeks is a famous actress from England who was born when honeysuckle flowers bloomed, hence her beautiful first name.
Most commonly known honeysuckle flowers are: Lonicera periclymenum (European Honeysuckle or Woodbine),
Lonicera japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle, White Honeysuckle, or Chinese Honeysuckle) and Lonicera sempervirens (Coral Honeysuckle, Trumpet Honeysuckle, or Woodbine Honeysuckle)
Hummingbirds love to visit honeysuckles. The flowers of honeysuckles have a sweet scent, they are bell-shaped containing sweet, edible nectar. If honeysuckle’s stem is broken it will also produce a strong sweet scent.
The berries of some honeysuckles are mildly poisonous, but others like Lonicera caerulea have edible berries. Honeysuckle is the ingredient of herbal cough remedies.
