Hibiscus rosa-sinensis flower trivia: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is called Bunga Raya in Malay and also known as Chinese hibiscus, China rose and shoe flower. The word bunga in Malay means “flower” and raya means “big”. Therefore the hibiscus is the “big flower” in Malay.
The red of the hibiscus flower petals represent courage, life, and rapid growth of the Malaysian.
The five flower petals represent the five Rukun Negara of Malaysia. The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis flower is printed on the Malaysian currency called: ringgit.
Hibiscus flowers are used as decorations in hair and the flowers are made into salads in the Pacific Islands. The hibiscus flowers are used to shine shoes in parts of India. In Indonesia hibiscus flowers are called “kembang sepatu” which means “shoe flower”.
