Japanese Bikini Model with Edgy Beauty

Living in exotic Hawaii offers many lifestyle benefits and some are photography related. Hawaii is not really the USA and the Asian population and tourists can be a source of beautiful, natural models (and non-models).

Growing up in oppressed Communist Hungary I never imagined I would be photographing Japanese bikini models in tropical paradise. These photos are from the early days of my model photography adventure taken in 2004.

Exotic Japanese Bikini Model Laying in Sand

Exotic japanese bikini model

Aki just like many other friends and acquaintances was nice enough to let me photograph her. After all what girl does not want to be a bikini model for a day?
Without much technical knowledge or model photography experience these photos were taken mostly on instinct.

The rough sand (which is shipped to Waikiki) makes an excellent accessory. Not sure if consciously or not but I was early on applying the use of diagonal lines which make images more dynamic and exciting.

Overlaying the Rule Of Thirds grid, we can see that the eye of the model is right in the cross hairs, which is the center of interest as the viewer first sees the photo. This composition is definitely according to The Golden Ratio.
The diagonal lines, via the model’s pose make the photo more dynamic and visually exciting.

Beautiful Bikini Model on Hawaiian Beach

Somewhat of an unusual pose and vantage point but ever since the beginning I was uninterested in the typical smiling brainless bikini model genre and really enjoyed exploring drama, strength with femininity of course.
I never ask my models to smile or laugh, if it happens naturally I can shoot it but forcing it is not my cup of tea. Once again the coarse sand rocks this photo.

Overlaying the Rule Of Thirds grid, we can see that the head of the model is too far up in the corner. One could say that even if the face is not in grid intersections, another visually interesting element: the model’s curvy hip is.

Mixing things up a bit by adding a new color, the blue of the ocean. Looking back (I am writing this post in 2009) the composition feels a bit boxy, it is a tight crop, therefore the diagonal line of the model’s body is a bit extreme. Critiquing one’s own photos extensively is a great way to remain humble and learn lessons for the future.

Overlaying the Rule Of Thirds grid, we can see that this composition is a double header. Two visually interesting elements are in grid cross hairs: the strong lines of the elevated shoulder and the Aloha print on the bikini bottom of this curvy model.

I like this photo. Exotic Japanese bikini model in a splashing wave. What is worth being noted is that this girl has never done a photoshoot but her natural personality, beauty and intelligence still shines through. These characteristics make are the best first time models, pure natural beauty without badly learned poses and diva attitude.

Overlaying the Rule Of Thirds grid, we can see that the top left cross hair is close enough to the face of the model to make this composition balanced enough. The diagonal lines via the camera tilt make the photo more dynamic and visually exciting.

Model holding a boogie board in a clean, simple arrangement. No assistants or reflectors needed, the bright sand bounces back plenty of sunlight.

Overlaying the Fibonacci spiral, we can see how the eyes of the view are able to follow the curving body of the model, from hip to face.

Making friends is easy especially if staying in a youth hostel; “where are you from” is the perfect ice breaker. I also photographed the other girl in this picture who was a great first time model as well.

Overlaying the Rule Of Thirds grid, we can see that the model is too centered in the composition and there are no interesting elements in the cross hairs. The diagonal lines of the boogie board do add a dynamic look but there should be more space in front of the model, than behind her.

Overlaying the Rule Of Thirds grid, we can see that both faces are more or less line up with the top cross hairs. But the fact that the girls are in the dead center of the composition does make the photo a bit too static.

Aloha from Hawaii! A hui hou! Until we meet again! A symmetric composition of a beautiful Japanese girl looking out to the beautiful blue ocean.

Overlaying the Rule Of Thirds grid, we can see how the symmetrical composition has enough power, beauty and story that the lack of Rule Of Thirds can be ignored here.
